Mercy for a Fly

August 3, 2007

I heard this narration from a student of the Habaib, wasn’t able to take down the source unfortunately.

Paraphrased

After the death of Imam al-Ghazali (may Allah be pleased with him) one of his students saw him in a dream. He asked the Imam what was his state? The Imam replied Allah has treated him with Mercy. He asked the Imam from all of his good acts, such as the great books he authored, his worship, his teaching of the deen which good deed earned him the Mercy of Allah?

The Imam replied: One night while I was writing, a fly landed on the tip of my quill and drank the ink on the nib. Out of mercy for the fly I let it drink until it flew away. Because of the mercy I showed to a creature of Allah, Allah forgave me my sins and treated me with Mercy.
